Match Report

Adam McGurk’s goal was enough to knock Accrington Stanley out of the Emirates FA Cup at the second round stage at Portsmouth.

The striker pounced in the 21st minute to make sure Paul Cook’s side are in the hat for the third round draw on Monday.

Stanley boss John Coleman had to make a change with Anthony Barry coming into the side with Seamus Conneely carrying a knock.

Pompey started the livelier side with Marc McNulty heading over the bar in the early stages and they took the lead on 21 minutes.

Striker McNulty burst down the right and played in a cross which evaded everyone at the near post and landed at the unmarked McGurk who lashed home the opener.

McNulty was close to a second for Pompey on the half hour when he burst into the area and fired inches wide and then he was in the thick of the action again three minutes later, hitting the bar with a thumping header.

Stanley’s first effort didn’t come until the 35th minute when Billy Kee turned with his back to goal and fired narrowly wide and the Stanley striker had another effort which wasn’t far off the target as the Reds began to press.

Defender Tom Davies also came close with a header just over the bar as Stanley upped the tempo before the break.

After the re-start Danny Hollands rifled an effort just wide for Pompey while the game did begin to get heated with Davies and McNulty talked to be referee Kevin Johnson and Kee booked for a challenge.

The game was racing from end-to-end and Jason Mooney was outstanding after McNulty had done all the hard work on 62 minutes and squared the ball for McGurk to stroke home his second but the keeper stuck out his leg to deny him.

Mooney also kept out a Kyle Bennett long range effort as Coleman made three substitutions with one of them, Shay McCartan, shooting just wide from 20 yards.

Referee Johnson came off injured with around two minutes to go and it meant there were seven minutes of injury time.

And Stanley came so close in that time with an Adam Buxton free kick finding Terry Gornell but the sub could only find the arms of keeper Brian Murphy  – with the final whistle blown shortly after.
