Match Report

Stanley brought a point home from Adams Park after a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

Sean McConville’s second half goal cancelled out Adebayo Akinfenwa’s early opener for the home side.

Wycombe’s breakthrough came inside the opening five minutes when former Reds full back Joe Jacobson delivered a free kick from the right and Akinfenwa headed home from the edge of the six yard box.

Stanley looked to respond to the early setback with McConville shooting straight at debutant goalkeeper Jamal Blackman and Chris Eagles flicking a Janoi Donacien cross into his arms.

Wanderers continued to pose a threat though, with Matt Bloomfield’s drive hitting a team mate and flying to Aaron Chapman before the Stanley keeper saved well from a Jacobson free kick.

John Coleman’s team improved as the half wore on with the returning Billy Kee latching onto John O’Sullivan’s cross and guiding a shot wide before Blackman kept out O’Sullivan’s low left foot shot.

The Chairboys had the last word of the first half when Aaron Pierre got his head to Jacobson’s free kick but Donacien cleared to ensure it was 1-0 to the hosts at the break.

The Red renaissance continued in the second period and within three minutes they were level. Doncacien found Kee down the right and the striker picked out McConville at the far post. The winger made no mistake, tapping home his second goal of the season from close range.

With parity restored both sides now looked to edge in front again. Wycombe’s Sam Wood thought he’d done just that when his 25 yard effort beat Chapman – only to clip to the top of the bar.

Largely it was Stanley posing the threat though, with only a brave block from Pierre denying Eagles a first Stanley goal and Mark Hughes firing high and wide.

McConville’s set pieces were starting to bear fruit too, with the wide man finding the head of Kee eleven minutes from the end only for Pierre to head behind and Seamus Conneely driving into the hands of Blackman.

There was almost late drama when Wycombe sub Nick Blackman let fly from distance but Chapman got down well to his left to push the ball away.
