Match Report

Paddy Lacey struck a wonder goal to give Stanley victory over Portsmouth on his league debut.

Midfielder Lacey came into the side for the Reds with Scott Brown taken ill yesterday.

And the former Sheffield Wednesday trainee will remember his first game hitting a 20-yard strike superbly to find the top corner of the net to secure three points against Pompey.

It was Portsmouth, who had five ex-Stanley players in their starting 18, who started off well with ex-Red winger Gary Roberts coming close on three minutes firing across the goal and narrowly wide.

Both Sean McConville and Billy Kee took free kicks for Stanley around the Portsmouth box but they came to nothing.

Chances were limited with former Stanley striker Michael Smith’s cross headed wide by Michael Doyle on 33 minutes.

It was Stanley who then almost took the lead through an own goal on 40 minutes when a McConville corner was headed on by Pompey defender Christian Burgess and the ball hit the post and then spun across the goal and out for a corner.

Omar Beckles headed wide on the stroke of half-time for Stanley and then Lacey made the difference on 51 minutes when he got the ball 20 yards out and found the top corner of the net, beyond the stretching David Forde for his first league goal.

Rommy Boco came on for the Reds on 62 minutes as Stanley looked for a second and McConville raced at the Pompey defence and got into the area but his final shot was easy for Forde.

Pompey pressured for the equaliser but didn’t seriously trouble keeper Aaron Chapman as Stanley held on for a vital three points and their second successive clean sheet
