Match Report

Accrington Stanley were held to a 1-1 draw at the Wham Stadium as 10 man Cheltenham battled back to secure a point.

Rob Dickie salvaged a late draw for Cheltenham, his 89th minute header enough to ensure that the Robins finished the game level.

Terry Gornell’s 66th minute header, against his former club, had given Stanley the lead, five minutes after Daniel O’Shaughnessy was dismissed for the visitors for a second bookable offence.

Manager John Coleman made four changes from the side that faced Cambridge United in League Two last Saturday.

Mark Hughes and John O’Sullivan both started in place of the suspended Janoi Donacien and Sean McConville respectively.

Seamus Conneely, now recovered from a hamstring injury, replaced Paddy Lacey, and Terry Gornell started for Billy Kee.

Stanley started the game brightly, putting the visitors under constant pressure in the game’s opening stages.

The Reds had the first chance of the game with Jordan Clark’s effort going just wide from Rommy Boco’s cross.

Boco was involved again soon after, his headed effort off-target from O’Sullivan’s ball in, as Stanley continued to threaten.

Harry Pell’s late challenge on Matty Pearson, right in front of the dugout, resulted in him going into the referee’s notebook, and Dickie soon followed for dissent.

Despite Stanley’s attacking intent, neither goalkeeper had much to do in the first half, both making just a single save each.

O’Shaughnessy picked up his first yellow, and Cheltenham’s third, after a challenge just outside the penalty area.

Dickie then kept the scores level before the break, heading a ball off the line that looked destined to creep inside the right-hand post.

In the second half, Stanley continued as they had in the first, Gornell firing into the side netting before Clark’s effort from distance was comfortably saved.

The turning point came in the 66th minute, as O’Shaughnessy was shown a second yellow card for the visitors after hauling down Gornell.

Five minutes later, Stanley finally made the breakthrough.

Boco’s cross into the penalty area was met by Gornell, the former Cheltenham player heading into the bottom right corner to give Stanley the lead.

Chris Eagles and Callum Jones came on for O’Sullivan and Clark, as the Reds looked to freshen up and protect the lead.

But Cheltenham battled back, and with a minute left to go James Dayton’s corner was headed home by Dickie to make the final score 1-1.
