Match Report

Stanley eased their relegation worries with a 2-0 win over Notts County – with two loan players on target with their first Accrington goals.

Hull defender Harvey Rodgers opened the scoring on 45 minutes with a header while Noor Husin, who only signed on Tuesday from Palace, had the easiest of tap-ins to make the game safe for the Reds on 80 minutes

It was the Reds first home win in the league since mid-October and a welcome one to give them some breathing space from the bottom two.

Stanley, playing three at the back with Janoi Donacien and Rommy Boco pushing forward as wing backs, started well.

Both sides had long range early efforts – Sean McConville for Stanley and Mark Yeates for County which were both off-target.

Stanley appealed for handball in the area but referee Darren Drysdale was having none of it while Yeates, signed by Kevin Nolan on Monday, wasn’t far off with a shot which sailed just wide of the far post.

County came close to opening the scoring on 26 minutes when Jon Stead raced free into the area, beat keeper Marek Rodak but Mark Hughes got back to deny them a certain goal.

At the other end it needed the finger-tips of Magpies keeper Adam Collin to deny Sheffield Wednesday loanee Sean Clare his first Stanley goal on 33 minutes.

The County keeper was at it again, this time tipping over from his own player Richard Duffy after he challenged for a header with Billy Kee.

Stanley were furious they weren’t awarded a penalty when Seamus Conneely went down in a challenge with Michael O’Connor as Drysdale again said no.

However the Reds took the lead on 45 minutes when McConville’s left wing cross was headed home by Hull loan defender Rodgers for his first Stanley goal.

Stanley had to defend in the opening stages of the second half with Stead clipping a near post strike over the bar while it needed a block from Clare to keep out Adam Campbell’s low drive.

Rommy Boco could have given Stanley a cushion on 54 minutes when he raced forward and into the area but Collin kept him out at the near post while Kee fired over.

Striker Kee also unleashed a fierce drive which Collin did well to hold onto as both sides then made a flurry of substitutions.

One of them Jonny Edwards had a header which was straight into the arms of Collin while County continued to press without testing Rodak.

New loan signing Husin won’t have had an easier goal on 80 minutes after Edwards raced forward, left two defenders in his wake with his shot saved by Collin but unmarked Husin followed up to fire into the empty net.

Boco had a chance to make it three but fired inches over the bar as Stanley celebrated a welcome win.
