Match Report

Accrington Stanley moved back into the Sky Bet League Two play-off places with a fine 4-0 win at home to Chesterfield.

First-half goals from Mark Hughes and a stunning Sean McConville effort put Stanley in the ascendancy before a howler from Spireites goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in the 47th minute put the game beyond doubt.

There was still time for Billy Kee to add a fourth with a minute of normal time remaining, a typical strikers goal as he tapped home inside the six-yard box.

John Coleman will have been delighted to see his side put the frustration of the New Years Day abandonment into such a commanding all-round performance that moved his side into 4th.

Both teams made a slow start on a cold afternoon at the Wham Stadium, but it was the first clear opportunity of the match that led to the opening goal in the 19th minute.

McConville found Kayden Jackson with a quickly taken short corner, which the forward smashed across the face of goal and there was centre half Hughes, who took a touch before coolly lifting the ball into the roof of the net like a seasoned centre forward – to notch his third goal of the season.

Chesterfield were posing a real threat on the counter-attack, particularly through the pace of debutant Zavon Hines, his lay-off sat up kindly for Josh Kay on the edge of the box but his rasping drive flew over the crossbar.

Stanley doubled their lead in style just after the half-hour mark, McConville picked up the ball 25-yards out before curling an inch-perfect shot into the top corner.

The ball nestling perfectly between the arms of the diving Ramsdale and the corner of the bar, to add another one to the winger’s growing collection of memorable strikes.

The second-half started in bizarre fashion as Stanley added a third. Following Jackson’s innocuous delivery into the box, Spireites ‘keeper Ramsdale fumbled the ball into his own net via the near post, under no apparent pressure. As the Reds moved into a commanding position in just the 47th minute.

There was a Football League debut for new loan signing Jimmy Dunne as he replaced Janoi Donacien in the 52

Kay forced Aaron Chapman into his first action of the game on the hour-mark, a rasping drive from distance was stopped by a fine diving save, the goalkeeper tipping the ball around the post.

With 10 minutes remaining Chapman pulled off a superb double save to preserve his clean-sheet, beating away an effort from long-range before racing to his feet to thwart Hines on the follow-up inside the six-yard box.

In the 89th minute Billy Kee rounded off a superb afternoon with his 15th goal of the season, seizing on a loose-ball inside the area to make the score 4-0.
