Match Report

Accrington Stanley booked their place in the knockout stage of the Checkatrade Trophy as they cruised to a 4-0 win over Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium.

Jonny Edwards early strike set Stanley on their way, before man-of-the-match by a country mile Erico Sousa, tormented Wigan time and time again, grabbing two goals in the process.

Mekhi McLeod completed the scoring in the dying moments, but the contest was long since finished.

Stanley took an early lead courtesy of Edwards smashing home an effort off the bar after great work down the right hand side by the electric Sousa.

Sousa continued to cause problems to his opposing defender Tylor Golden who’s early booking made his task for the evening all the more difficult.

The Reds were creating chances regularly in the early stages with Mallik Wilks and Farrend Rawson putting headers just wide.

On the half hour mark Sousa’s reward came for his continuing lively darts down the right, he found himself further inside on the edge of the area, taking a touch to control before arrowing a low effort into the back of the net off Theo Roberts’ near post.

Stanley were in cruise control and fashioned the first shooting opportunity of the second period, McLeod using his pace to cut inside a lay a ball back to Wilks but the strikers shot was well-blocked at a crucial moment by Terrell Thomas.

But it didn’t take long for the Reds to find the killer third, the star of the evening Sousa received the ball deep, he beat his man before rifling a low shot into Roberts far corner, for his second goal of the evening.

The only flashpoint of the evening came when young Wigan midfielder Will McGuffie was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card following a reckless challenge on skipper for the evening Scott Brown – all before McLeod ended the rout in the 89th minute, lashing home on the half-volley to make it 4-0.
