Match Report

Accrington Stanley were knocked out of the FA Cup following an incredible First Round replay that saw 10-man Guiseley win on penalties.

It was a breathless evening at the Wham Stadium, a frantic first-half somehow ended goalless despite a flurry of chances for both sides.

The non-leaguers task was made all the more difficult when Chris M’Boungou was sent off on the stroke of half-time.

Stanley took that momentum and opened the scoring through Sean McConville in the 47th minute, but the Reds were forced to extra-time by John Rooney’s penalty 10 minutes from time.

It was the non-league side who made a quick start, as Jean-Yves Niate forced Aaron Chapman into an early stop, after Mike Fondop flicked-on a header inside the penalty area from an early corner.

The tie moved to the shootout and Stanley missed their first two, Billy Kee and Scott Brown’s efforts stopped by the magnificent Jonny Maxted and it was left to Mike Fondop send his second into the Second Round.

Seconds later down the opposite end, McConville found Mark Hughes unmarked at the back post, but the defender’s header was thwarted by the near post.

Fondop was causing the Reds all sorts of problems in the early stages, he beat off three Stanley defenders to burst his way into the box and tee-up Jake Lawlor but his low shot was saved well by Chapman.

It was a real end-to-end breathless cup-tie as the momentum swung Accrington’s way and the home side poured forward, McConville was prevented by a superb Guiseley last-man’s sliding stop before Kayden Jackson struck the inside of the post from the resulting corner.

Stanley had the ball in the back of the net on 40 minutes, but it was ruled out for an infringement inside the area after Billy Kee had stooped down low to head home Janoi Donacien’s cross. The wait for the goal went on, somehow.

On the stroke of half-time Guiseley were reduced to 10-men as defender M’Boungou was sent off for a second yellow card, as he brought down McLeod who was advancing towards the penalty area.

As the half moved into the three minutes of time added on, there was still time for Kee to rattle the bar once more with a header inside the box, meaning it remained goalless at the break.

It took just two second-half minutes for Stanley to make the breakthrough, Callum Johnson curled a fine ball into the penalty area which was powered home by the head of McConville, who celebrated his North West Player of the Year win last night with a goal.

In the 63rd minute Guiseley spurned a golden opportunity to level the tie, but Fondop blazed his shot over the bar, from inside the six-yard box after Chapman had spilled the ball at his feet, a let-off for the Reds goalkeeper.

With ten minutes left on the clock a seemingly innocuous coming together in the box led to a Guiseley penalty being awarded, half-time substitute Rooney made no mistake putting it straight down the middle to make it 1-1 and send the replay into extra-time.

The first period of extra-time was a cagey one as 10-man Guiseley dug in their heels, but in the 105th minute the ball sat-up kindly for McConville, he hit it sweet on the volley but a superb save by Maxted denied him again.

With seven minutes of extra-time remaining Stanley thought they’d found a winner from a deflection off a Guiseley man but the linesman had his flag raised in another incredible turn on an incredible night.

There was still time for drama as Callum McFadzean tried to lob Chapman but hit the roof of the net before McConville was denied by another wonderful Maxted save, as he clawed the ball off the line with three minutes remaining.

Kee and Brown stepped up first for Stanley from the spot, both were thwarted by Maxted. Chapman then saved from McFadzean to keep his side in with a shout.

McConville, Haworth, Jackson, C Brown and Wilks all scored, leaving Fondop the chance to send his side through, the big centre-forward obliged – sparking wild celebrations in front of the travelling Guiseley fans.
