INTERVIEW: John wants to finish season on a high

Reds welcome Tranmere Rovers in final game of campaign

26 April 2024

John Doolan is looking for his first win at the Wham Stadium as Accrington Stanley manager to finish the 2023/24 season on a high.

The 18th place Reds take on Tranmere Rovers tomorrow - Stanley can finish as high as 16th with a victory or drop to 19th.

Nigel Adkins' side are in 15th place and have won their last two games.

Doolan said: "The big thing in any game of football is you want to win for the fans. We want to get over the line and send the fans home happy, they have been brilliant all season, so to get the three points would be fantastic.

"Tranmere are a good side, they have won their last two matches playing a certain way, they play a certain formation but we might get a surprise tomorrow, they might change their personnel, but I am looking forward to that challenge."

It's a big time for Doolan now as he looks to add to his coaching staff, speaks to all the players who are out of contract and looks for new additions for the 2024/25 season.

"It's been a rollercoaster so far with results and dealing with everything on and off the pitch but I have enjoyed it.

"The challenge is ongoing. It's a case of getting this last game out the way, get some players in and make decisions on other players. That's difficult.

"We know we need players in, we know we need to change players.

"It's hard. I have had these conversations at Under-18 and Under-21 level but never at first team level.

"They are difficult conversations to have but one that we have to have as a club, going forward, to bring new players in.

"I have experienced it myself as a player. You feel like it's the end of the world but I know it’s not. I am not looking forward to doing it but it’s part of football.

"It will be after the game, over Sunday/Monday next week, and then it is going to be a hectic summer.

"On the coaching side, we need one or two in, it's a big task, but hopefully we will have that done before season starts."
