Billy Kee boosted Stanley’s automatic promotion bid with an 83nd minute winner at bottom club Dagenham and Redbridge.
Kee got the ball from Mark Hughes as the game looked to be petering out to a goalless draw. His first chance was blocked and it came back to the striker who fired his 16th goal of the season into the bottom of the net.
The win keeps Stanley in fifth place in League Two, one point off Bristol Rovers in third spot.
Despite having five first teamers missing, Stanley started well and had two early chances with Dagenham keeper Luke O’Brien making a comfortable save from Shay McCartan and then finger-tipping a Scott Brown blast over the bar.
At the other end defender Dominic Hyam headed straight at Ross Etheridge while the defender came close on 15 minutes, hooking an effort inches over the crossbar as Dagenham battled hard.
Stanley felt aggrieved to have two penalty shouts turned down before Kee had a shot blocked from close range and Piero Mingoia’s strike whistled just wide of the post.
Then the woodwork denied the Reds the opener on 33 minutes when Mingoia’s cross found McConville but he headed against the post and the ball fell kindly into O’Brien’s waiting arms.
However Dagenham should have broken the deadlock three minutes later when Matty Cash found unmarked Jamie Cureton in the area and he had the goal at his mercy but somehow fired over the crossbar from six yards.
Coleman must have had words at half-time and it was McConville who had the first chance after the break with a 25 yard strike which wasn’t far off while Kee’s turn and shot almost tucked in the bottom corner.
Tom Davies headed straight into O’Brien’s arms and midfielder Brown drilled wide as Stanley created the better chances.
Kee almost took advantage of O’Brien racing out of the goal to clear the loose ball as McCartan charged forward on 69 minutes but the striker’s 40 yard lob towards the unguarded goal was blocked by a defender.
It looked like it would be a frustrating afternoon for the Reds until Kee popped up with his later winner.
