Sean McConville says it has taken time – but now the fixtures are out, it has sunk in that Accrington Stanley are a SkyBet League One club.
The 2018/19 fixtures were released this morning, with the Reds starting their historic League One campaign at home to Gillingham with ties against Charlton, Bradford, Blackpool, Rochdale, Sunderland and more to look forward to.
“I think the day when fixtures come out, it’s when you start looking forward to next season,” said the winger.
“You can’t forget what we did last season and I still get goose bumps about it but it has sunk in as time has gone by. It was a rollercoaster season and one I will never forget.
“Now the fixture list is out it means we are looking forward to next season, you can pin point the different games and we will give the league a real go.”
Stanley are, again, the favourites by the bookmakers for relegation but McConville is not worried about that.
“We have got to embrace the challenge. We thrive and enjoy the underdog tag, it suits us. Last season we were tipped to lose most of our games at the start of the season, especially away games, but we like proving people wrong. For the duration of the time I have been here, we have kept upsetting the odds.
“We are going into this season as one of the most confident teams. We should have more confidence than the teams who were relegated from the Championship and more confidence than the teams who just escaped relegation from League One, because we won the league.
“We have got to keep the momentum from last season, and that includes the fans too who bought into it from the first day, and I am sure we will take a few teams by surprise.”
