Match Report

Accrington Stanley were beaten 2-0 by Gillingham on the opening day of the Sky Bet League One season, their first home defeat in 2018.

First half goals by Brandon Hanlan and Josh Parker gave the visitors a two-goal halftime which was ultimately enough to see the Reds beaten.

The defeat is manager John Coleman’s first loss on the opening day of the season since 2009.

It was the Reds that had the first real chance of the game after eight minutes, when Callum Johnson lofted a ball to Sean McConville.

The winger’s header beat goalkeeper Tomas Holy, only to be cleared off the line at the last moment by Max Ehmer.

Gillingham then broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute, Regan Charles-Cook’s low through ball finding Hanlan in the area for him to poke the ball past Jonny Maxted and give the visitors the lead.

The Reds searched for a leveller as the half continued, but two minutes before the break the Gills doubled their advantage.

Luke O’Neill’s curling cross from the right-hand side found Parker in space six-yards out, and the striker headed home to make it 2-0 and double the Gill’s advantage.

The second half provided more frustration for the Reds, who were unable to break down a stubborn Gillingham defence.

With 20 minutes to play, Seamus Conneely raced into the area to meet a McConville free kick but the skipper was unable to test Holy in goal.

Five minutes later, referee Antony Backhouse waved away McConville’s appeals for a penalty after the midfielder appeared to have been held back whilst through inside the area.

In the dying stages, the Reds continued to press for a goal with a succession of corners but Ross Sykes and substitute Offrande Zanzala was unable to find the net.
