Match Report

Michael Ihiekwe scored his first Stanley goal as the Reds drew 1-1 with league leaders Portsmouth at the Wham Stadium.

The on-loan Rotherham defender headed home on 64 minutes, two minutes after Oli Hawkins had given Pompey the lead.

Billy Kee also saw his penalty saved in the first half while Pompey rattled the crossbar after the break in a lively encounter.

Connor Ripley was the first keeper in action, stopping a shot from Jamal Lowe from a tight angle on eight minutes.

Gareth Evans tried his luck from distance on 13 minutes and Ripley had to produce a diving save to keep it out of the top corner with the resulting corner frantically cleared by the Reds.

Stanley’s first real chance came from Kee from 20 yards on 16 minutes but it was straight at Craig MacGillivray.

Ronan Curtis and Lowe were both denied by Ripley as Portsmouth created the better chances in the opening half hour.

However the Reds grew into the game and then enjoyed a spell of pressure.

Piero Mingoia’s curling strike was comfortable for MacGillivray while Sean McConville’s strike looped up and was tipped behind by the Pompey keeper.

The Reds were awarded a penalty when MacGillivray was judged to have brought down Kee on 32 minutes.

Kee’s spot kick was pushed out by MacGillivray  – up to this point the Stanley striker had scored all his four penalties this season.

There were half chances for both sides but it remained goalless at the break.

Pompey continued to threaten after the break and a Curtis volley came off the crossbar on 57 minutes.

The visitors took the lead on 62 minutes when an Evans free kick found Oli Hawkins was able to send the ball past Ripley.

The lead only lasted two minutes before Stanley levelled when a McConville free kick in was headed home by Ihiekwe.

Stanley looked for another but Kee’s bobbling shot was collected by MacGillivray.

Both sides looked for the winner, with MacGillivray denying sub Connor Hall in the final minutes, but had to share the points.
