Match Report

Stanley surrendered a two-goal lead to lose 5-2 at Burton Albion, after the introduction of substitute David Templeton turned the game in the Brewers’ favour.

Templeton came off the bench just after the hour-mark with the Reds leading 2-1 to turn things around for the hosts, as Burton scored four goals in 20 second half minutes.

Sean McConville had put Stanley ahead with a powerful effort from close range in the 37th minute before the Reds doubled their advantage three minutes later through a Billy Kee penalty.

Jordan Clark raced into the area only to be tripped in goalkeeper Bradley Collins’ attempt to claim the ball, and Kee fired home from the spot for his 15th goal of the season.

Scott Fraser scored for the hosts just before half-time to get the hosts back into the contest, before Templeton curled home a free kick to level for Burton with 20 minutes left to play.

Ten minutes later Templeton was involved again, being brought down in the box to allow Lucas Akins to convert the spot kick and give the hosts the lead.

The two Brewers combined three minutes later to extend Burton’s advantage, Akins crossing low into the area and Templeton firing home to make it four.

Stanley struggled to keep the Brewers at bay in the game’s final stages, Jonny Maxted being called upon to prevent Burton extending their lead, before Akins was brought down in the box in the 90th minute.

The striker, who now surpasses Stanley forward Kee as the Brewers leading EFL scorer, fired into the top right corner to condemn Stanley to a miserable afternoon.

Manager John Coleman had made one change to the side that beat Wycombe Wanderers last time out, Scott Brown recalled to central midfield with Paul Smyth away on international duty.

Stanley looked bright in the opening exchanges, good work on the right winning the Reds back-to-back corners.

The hosts grew into the contest as the first half continued, Harvey Rodgers, Callum Johnson and Janoi Donacien all called upon at the back to make timely tackles and prevent the Brewers from testing Maxted.

When the goalkeeper was tested by Kyle McFadzean’s effort from distance in the 21st minute he was equal to it, before then stopping Jamie Allen eight minutes later.

Stanley withstood mounting pressure before forcing Burton back, and were rewarded eight minutes before half-time.

McConville brought the ball down well with his thigh, shifted to his right and hammered a low shot through the legs of Collins to put the Reds ahead with his 10th League One goal.

Stanley sensed a quick second, and in the 40th minute Clark was felled in the box allowing Kee to step up, send Collins the wrong way, and double the Reds lead from the spot.

Kee had another effort three minutes later as Stanley looked for a third before Fraser pulled one back for Burton just before the break, shooting past Maxted and into the bottom right corner from the edge of the area.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser in the early stages of the second half, limiting the Reds to few chances before Templeton curled home a free kick within five minutes of coming on.

Burton then went ahead in the 78th minute after Akins found the bottom right corner from the penalty spot after Templeton had been fouled seconds after Donacien had hooked a shot away from the line.

Templeton fired home Burton’s fourth before a second penalty for the home side, the game’s third overall, was converted by Akins to keep Stanley just two points from the drop zone in League One.
