REPORT: Stanley 4 Tranmere Rovers 1

Shipley, Henderson and a Nolan double secures Reds final day win

27 April 2024

Alex Henderson celebrated his new Accrington Stanley contract by scoring as the Reds won their first home game under manager John Doolan.

Stanley last won at home 13th February but they signed off the season in style with a 4-1 win over Tranmere Rovers, coming from behind.

Jack Nolan also scored two penalties to take his tally to 17 goals in a productive season.

In a lively opening, Tranmere took the lead on 95 seconds when Regan Hendry passed a free kick to Luke Norris who rifled home from 20 yards.

Stanley replied almost immediately on four minutes when Jack Nolan’s corner was headed home by Lewis Shipley at the near post.

Nolan fired an effort wide from distance while Shaun Whalley’s strike was just over the bar as the Reds pressed Rovers.

Both goalkeepers had little to do until Stanley’s Radek Vitek pushed away Hendry’s volley on 32 minutes.

Luke McGee at the other end then kept his side in it, keeping out Whalley’s blistering strike and then one-handedly pushing out Shipley’s long-range effort just before half-time.

After the re-start, Liam Coyle’s dipping shot was narrowly over and then the Reds were awarded a penalty when Coyle’s header hit the arm of Rob Apter.

Nolan’s 51st penalty found the back of the net for his 16th goal of a productive season.

It was three two minutes later when a deflected ball forwarded landed at the feet of Henderson and he made space and rifled the ball home for his fifth goal of the campaign in front of the Farleys Clayton End where he used to support the Reds.

Whalley looked for a fourth and he wasn’t far off on the hour mark with a long-range strike.

Stanley were awarded another penalty on 82 minutes for a foul on Whalley and Nolan this time blasted it into the roof of the net.

There was a lap of honour for the Reds as they celebrated a win at the Wham as plans continue for the 2024/5 season over the summer.

Thank you for your support!
