REPORT: Doncaster Rovers 4 Stanley 0

Reds slip to loss at in-form Rovers

13 April 2024

Accrington Stanley lost 4-0 at in-form Doncaster Rovers who made it eight successive wins.

Rovers scored twice in each half with the Reds unable to build on their 3-1 win over Newport midweek.

John Doolan selected the same XI which overcame the Exiles with Liam Coyle returning to the squad for the first time since mid-September.

Doncaster opened the scoring on six minutes when a long ball forward found forward Hakeeb Adelakun and he fired low past Radek Vitek – the Lincoln loanee’s 12th goal of the season.

Rovers almost made it two soon after when a Luke Molyneux cross met the head of top scorer Joe Ironside but Vitek collected it.

Stanley grew into the game with Jack Nolan playing a couple of good balls into the box and Tommy Leigh did have the ball in the back of the net on 14 minutes but it was ruled out for a foul.

It was two on 21 minutes when Adelakun got the ball in the box and his cross was fired into the net by Ironside for his 20th goal of the season.

The hand of Vitek denied Adelakun a third after another ball over the top caught out Stanley.

The Reds came close to getting one back on 28 minutes when Alex Henderson got the ball to the right of the area but keeper Thimothee Lo-Tutala managed to push his shot away.

Doncaster pressed towards the end of the half, as they looked for a third, but the Reds defence denied them another.

Doolan made three changes at the break with Matt Lowe, Coyle and Dan Martin coming on for the second half.

Stanley started on the front foot, Martin firing across the goal and wide and a Lowe shot was into the arms of Lo-Tutala.

However Rovers remained a threat, Vitek palming away another Ironside chance on 56 minutes and they got their third on 60 minutes.

Rovers broke down the left and Zain Westbrooke set up full back James Maxwell in the area and he fired home.

It was four on 71 minutes when Molyneux got ball in area, made space and passed to Owen Bailey who flicked the ball home from close range.

Nolan hit the woodwork in added time as Stanley looked for a consolation.

Doncaster moved into eighth place in League Two with Stanley 18th.
